Botox Q & A

What is Botox?

Botox, an injectable treatment produced from botulinum toxin, has been used for years to treat medical conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms, and excessive underarm sweating. However, it’s best known as a safe cosmetic treatment that targets facial wrinkles.

When Dr. Obianwu injects a small amount of Botox into precisely targeted muscles, the medication temporarily blocks the nerve signals that trigger muscle contractions. As the muscles relax, their associated wrinkles are significantly diminished or eliminated.

What facial wrinkles are treated with Botox?

Over the years, your face develops two types of wrinkles. Static wrinkles are caused by age-related changes in your skin. These changes include skin that thins out and a progressive drop in the production of collagen, which gives your skin strength, and hyaluronic acid, which is vital for keeping your skin hydrated.

A second group of wrinkles, called dynamic wrinkles, are generally deeper and more noticeable than static wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles develop due to years of repeating the same muscle movements to make certain facial expressions.

Since Botox targets muscle activity, it’s extremely effective for dynamic wrinkles, effectively treating moderate-to-severe crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead creases. By carefully targeting a few specific muscles, Dr. Obianwu can help diminish dynamic wrinkles while preserving your ability to make natural facial expressions.

What should I expect during and after Botox treatment?

Before your treatment, Dr. Obianwu explains the procedure and talks with you about whether you want to use a topical anesthetic. Your procedure only takes about 10 minutes, depending on the area being treated. Afterward, you may develop slight redness, swelling, and possibly bruising.

You don’t need to plan downtime to recover, so you can get back to your normal daily activities when your treatment is finished. However, you should avoid strenuous activities for several hours.

How long will my results last?

Botox takes effect in 24-48 hours, which is when you’ll see the optimal effect. Although Botox gradually wears off, it produces results that last up to four months.* After that time, you can get another treatment to maintain your results.
